Jesus Christ Prayed for the Believer

Jesus Prayed for His Disciples

Book of John Chapter 17:1-26

The Apostle Paul was writing to the Corinthian Church and he gave us this piece of Scripture by the Holy Spirit.

1Co_2:16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

It is a fact that we cannot know everything of the mind of the Lord but today in Chapter 17 of the Book of the Apostle John, we get to take a look into the deep thoughts of our Savior.

*****Joh 17:1 These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:
Joh 17:2 As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.

At this time these 11 disciples of Christ Jesus are with Him in transit to the Garden of Gethsemane. It would only be a few hours before Jesus would be taken into custody and this same day He would be murdered by Crucifixion, the Capitol death of the Roman Government.

Jesus clearly understood all these things, yet His thoughts were still upon the souls His Father had given to Him!

Jesus was praying directly unto God the Father, but He was within hearing range of His disciples.

Jesus knew that His time had come.

The time of the birth of Jesus had been set by His Father:

Gal 4:4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,
Gal 4:5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

Now the time of His death was set by His Father, and Jesus had known these things all along.

Most of us when we pray, we bow in humility, but Jesus lifted up His eyes. We must always remember when we approach the Throne of God, we must remember who is sitting upon that throne.

It is the Almighty Living God!

Psa 89:7 God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be had in reverence of all them that are about him.
Psa 89:8 O LORD God of hosts, who is a strong LORD like unto thee? or to thy faithfulness round about thee?

We must have a reverend fear of God but not a fear of “bondage” but the fear of “adoption”. Romans 8:15

We must be clear in our minds that true prayer must be based upon “faith in” the promises of God.

We live and die by the promises of God.

Our hope lies in the promises of God and even God the Son respected the promises that God the Father had given to Him. Again our example!

We know that Jesus, the Messiah is the same one who walked with Adam and was Captain of the host that help Joshua, but until Jesus came as the Messiah, no one really knew Him.

It was nearly time for Jesus to return to Heaven as High Priest of the Church.

It is our High Priest that represents all believers to God the Father.

Jesus Christ is forever our Intercessor.

Heb 7:25 Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.
Heb 7:26 For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;
Heb 7:27 Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people’s: for this he did once, when he offered up himself.

It is Jesus Christ who now holds the power over all flesh.

Since Jesus did come, we now know more about the Triune God. God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.

*****Joh 17:3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
Joh 17:4 I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.

How is eternal life obtained? By knowing the only true God and that by Jesus Christ!

Jesus had done His part. He had laid down the foundation of the Church. Jesus had made us all aware of God the Father. When Jesus got back to Heaven, He would dispatch the Holy Spirit to keep the Church moving in the right direction.

It would soon be time for God to do His part. God would have to glorify God the Son by raising Him from that death He had sent Him to do!

We will notice as we go through this prayer that Jesus uses the term Father 6 times. Not “My Father”, not “Our Father” but “Father”.

Everything Jesus did upon this earth was the most important thing that could have happened for us but the one thing that was the most important was the death of our Savior. Let that sink in for a moment!

Jesus was truly the Messiah, the immortal God but He was also man and His man side need to be encouraged and strengthened and He had to realize that only in His death would there be victory.

The whole purpose of God coming to this earth was to provide to mankind the only means of eternal life.

Jesus Christ was glorified by God giving Him the power and authority over all flesh.

Joh 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
Joh 5:25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.

True life can come from only one direction, it is the life of God instilled into each believer.

It is in God’s energy.
It is in God’s life force.
It is in God’s being.
It is in God’s essence.
It is in God’s principle.
It is in God’s power over all life!

It is impossible to live in eternal life upon this place called earth.

Eternal life comes by perfection and perfection comes only by the Lord Jesus Christ!

1Jn 5:11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
1Jn 5:12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
1Jn 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

Jesus Christ had glorified His Father by completing the work God the Father had given Him to do!

It is the same for each of us. We will have glorified God when we have finished the work the Lord has given us to do!

Glorified also means, we honor God, we exalt God, we give God the glory for the things we accomplish in His name.

1Pe_4:14 If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.

Verse 5

*****Joh 17:5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.
Joh 17:6 I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.
Joh 17:7 Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee.

Notice Jesus did not say, “Our Father” that would have put Him on the same level as we are.

Jesus did not say “My Father” because this could have led to a belief of separation, not One God but three.

Jesus simply says “Father” as Jesus had confirmed the Holy Trinity.

What do we already know?

2Co 8:9 For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.

Php 2:7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
Php 2:8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

We know that Jesus had emptied Himself of His glory to take on flesh to do the work that God the Father had given Him to do.

Now Jesus is saying to restore that Glory to Him that He had had before the first day of creation.

God the Son was sent to restore the eternal life that Adam once had before sin entered into his life and Jesus would complete that work when He was nailed to that cross until He gave His life for us!

God the Son is distinct from God the Father, yet they are still One God, including God the Holy Spirit.

In His short time on this earth Jesus had shown the world the character and the nature of God.

Jesus also showed the world He was not about to beg people to believe, but only He had the truth and the world is full of lies.

Jesus taught us not to waste our time on those who were not receptive to His truth!

Mar 6:11 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment, than for that city.

It is God that calls those who are to be used.

It is the call of God that enables us to believe!

Rom 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

But not everyone called of God will believe.

Mat_22:14 For many are called, but few are chosen.

We should understand this calling as the work of the Holy Spirit!

Joh 6:44 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.
Joh 6:45 It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.
Joh 6:46 Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father.
Joh 6:47 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.

Then the truth comes by the Lord Jesus Christ.

Joh 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Verse 8

*****Joh 17:8 For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.
Joh 17:9 I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.

We may sometimes question the faith of these 11 men but in this text, Jesus says they received His words by “Faith”. Surely like us they did not understand many things but if Jesus says it then, it has to be the truth.

These 11 men had come out of the world to accept the Lord Jesus Christ.

These 11 men had truly become disciples, even though they were not perfect.

Let’s consider that even when we were out in the world, we belonged to God because He is our Creator.

We are called and then chosen if we accept the Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior and are therefore given to Jesus by our Creator.

One day in the near future, the Lord Jesus will present us back to our Creator our Father, as been made perfect and we can then spend eternity with our Heavenly Father.

Heb 3:14 For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end;

The key to these things taking place is the fact that we have place our “faith” in the promises of God’s Dear Son!

At this point Jesus prays for these 11 men.

Jesus did not pray for the world at this minute because the world needed these men to be the chosen Apostles of the Lord Jesus Christ.

We already know that God had a great love for the world. (Hence John 3:16).

Jesus prayed for these 11 men because he was responsible for their welfare.

It is these 11 men plus the Apostle Paul who would turn this world upside down to form the Church!

*****Joh 17:10 And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them.
Joh 17:11 And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.
Joh 17:12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.

Again Jesus places Himself on the same level as our Heavenly Father. Every character trait that is in our Heavenly Father is also in God the Son and the same can be said of the Holy Spirit.

Another important fact we see here is that God the Father and God the Son have the same concern over all believers beginning with these men.

Joh 10:29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.
Joh 10:30 I and my Father are one.

We must understand that the mission of the Church, preaching the “Gospel” was given to these 11 men.

These were the first Ambassadors of Christ on this world!

Mat 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
Mat 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Mat 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

If we have not seen by now, we live in a very divisive world. It was very important that these 11 men to not get caught up in this divisiveness.

They were to be the start of the Church and they dearly needed one another!

The Lord Jesus Christ had provided the foundation of the Church.

When Jesus returned to Heaven the responsibility of the Church would be handed over to the Holy Spirit.

Jesus prayed to His Heavenly Father that the believers would be as close to God, as God and His Son!

The Church is to be “One” in the same nature as God by being “Born Again” in the family of God.
The Church is to become a partaker of the “Divine Nature” of God.
The Church is to become the family of God.
The Church is to become the rebuilt Temple of God that cannot be destroyed.
The Church is to become the preferred race of people.

Eph 4:17 This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,
Eph 4:18 Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:
Eph 4:19 Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.
Eph 4:20 But ye have not so learned Christ;
Eph 4:21 If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:

The Church is to have a single purpose, to spread the “Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ”.

The Church is to have the “Joy of the Lord” in following in the ways of the Lord Jesus Christ!

*****Joh 17:13 And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.
Joh 17:14 I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

That “Joy” comes because Jesus was going home to be with His Father and we are to have this same “Joy” as we will one day be going home to be with the Father!

Many believe that once saved God will deliver us through the trials of this world but that is not true.

The promise of God says He will deliver us through our trials and tribulations.

It means we will live a victorious life! We might ask, why not?

God will always answer the prayers of His Son!

God has given all believers to Jesus Christ.

No doubt the closer the relationship we have with the Lord and our Father in Heaven, the better off we are!

The truth is God will not allow anything to come between us and His Son.

Joh 6:39 And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.
Joh 6:40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.

God does not forget the promises He makes!

Why is the Christian hated? We are those aliens that the world has been spending so much money trying find.

We are those peculiar people in a world of people who reject the truth.

Why does the Lord not take us out of this world when we are saved?

The Lord specifically asked Him not to, we have a work that needs to be accomplished.

*****Joh 17:15 I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.
Joh 17:16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
Joh 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

You see Satan, the evil one, can only tempt the Christian, God will certainly keep us from his evil clutches.

These 11 men needed a protection that could come from no other source, just as we do today.

Just because of the message that the disciples of the Lord would bring, they would be hated, and this has not changed today.

1) God has given all His disciples the Word of God. Satan’s disciples do not want to hear what God has to say.
2) God is Holy, the followers of Satan are immoral and depraved.
3) God the Son demands total allegiance and a commitment to God the Father, through God the Holy Spirit.

Jesus came out of Heaven to lay claim to all those that God will call and who God has chosen if they would have “faith”.

All those who would be “Born Again” and would seek to be in the nature of God and not the sin nature of Adam.

The disciples were needed to begin the Church, the body of Christ, the Church, the home of God’s messengers.

To sanctify is to be set apart for God’s use!

Rom 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
Rom 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Jesus Christ did go to the Cross to pay our sin debt but that was only part of it.

Jesus knew that this must take place, so mankind could recover the purity and truth that God intended when Adam and Eve were made in innocence.

To be sanctified then could only take place by knowing the complete truth of God. The Written Word of God that we have today!

Psa 19:7 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.
Psa 19:8 The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.
Psa 19:9 The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether.
Psa 19:10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.

Jesus then says all disciples of Jesus Christ are to be missionaries and ambassadors for Christ.

*****Joh 17:18 As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.
Joh 17:19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.

It is a great privilege to be a part of God’ plan for salvation for all those who will believe!

All disciples have the same ministry of Jesus the ministry of reconciliation.

2Co_5:18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;
2Co_5:19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

Heb_2:17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.

How did Jesus say He sanctified Himself?

Psa 40:7 Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me,
Psa 40:8 I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.
Psa 40:9 I have preached righteousness in the great congregation: lo, I have not refrained my lips, O LORD, thou knowest.
Psa 40:10 I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation: I have not concealed thy lovingkindness and thy truth from the great congregation.

Now then Jesus brings the Church into the picture.

*****Joh 17:20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;
Joh 17:21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

Saving “Faith” can come only by the Word of God.

From the Word of God we learn of the “pardon”.
We learn of “justification”.
We learn of “adoption”.
We learn of “sanctification”.

All these through the Lord Jesus Christ!

Joh 20:31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

Notice it is very clear, the benefits of Jesus Christ come only to those who believe in the work He has done for our salvation!

Jesus has prayed for each and every one who has “Faith” in the Lord Jesus Christ!

Notice we must not only believe upon the words written about Him, but we must believe on Him, the Living Son of God!

Here we also see the mistake of the modern Church. There is no new message. God has not changed anything to suit this modern world. To be a “Born Again” child of God we must believe the message of these 11 men plus the Apostle Paul and this message will never change because their message was the message that the Lord Jesus Christ gave to them!

We can never be “ONE” with Christ if we do not accept His Message!

*****Joh 17:22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:
Joh 17:23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.

A divided message is not a true message!

As believers we must be unified around the Word of God.

Just as a divided house cannot stand and a divided kingdom cannot stand then a divided Church cannot stand, and this is what we see today.

The church is more divided than it has ever been. A division that goes far beyond foolish denominations.

We must understand that it is not what we believe, it is what God has said!

The Word of God has been so twisted up deliberately by so many, that today many do not know the truth of the Word of God.

We can only give God the glory when we teach His truth!

God gave Jesus His message and sent Him to this earth with that message.
Jesus gave that same message to the Apostles.
The Apostle gave that same message to this world.
It’s time we listened to what God has to say without voicing our own opinion!

Col 1:25 Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God;
Col 1:26 Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints:
Col 1:27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

We can never have the glory of God if we reject the glory of His Word!

*****Joh 17:24 Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.
Joh 17:25 O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me.
Joh 17:26 And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.

We find this Scripture in the Book of Hebrews:

Heb 1:8 But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.

God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit all share the same throne in Heaven because they are “One God”.

With this thought in mind, it is the last will of a dyeing man, Jesus in the Flesh, and Jesus the Son of God, that all His disciples be with Him in Heaven.

Now everyone who goes home to be with the Lord, including those 12 Apostles are already with the Lord in Heaven and we will join them all at our death or at the “Rapture” of the Church which is the tool that will make the Jews jealous enough to realize that they have been wrong all these years.

1Jn_3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

Jesus now prays to His righteous Father who always does things the right way and Jesus says it is only right that the family comes back home.

It is just as obvious today as in these last days of Jesus on this earth, that the world still does not know the One True God and it does not look like the world cares.

We know that we have a loving Father in Heaven who not only loved this world enough to have a plan of salvation that cannot fail, but in the end, will accept every believer into His family in a totally new home.

The world says we are crazy, but it is actually in reverse. It is the world that is foolish.

The world we live in now will one day reach a point when all mankind are deliberately evil and the Lord will return to do as he did at the time off Noah, yet this time by fire but this will never take place until he has brought His children home.

It is all our job to declare to this world the name of God which is “LOVE” if we just look at His actions toward us!

It is impossible to love a God that we cannot know!

It is Jesus Christ who expresses the Love of God and shares that love with us!

There is no god like unto Jehovah, the “I AM” of the Bible.

Amen

Let’s Pray!

We Can Be Certain Of Christ’s Prayer

The Certainty Of Christ’s Prayer

Book of Luke 11

Some people just do not understand that prayer is our means of having a conversation with God!

It was by the cross and the veil was rent into that we have direct access to the throne of God!

We waste our breath in prayer if we do not first believe, in faith, that God is who He says He is and can do what we read about in the Word of God.

If we do not believe that God will answer prayer, then why pray at all?

Our prayers must be sincere!

Heb 10:22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

The disciples of Jesus asked Him to teach them how to pray because prayer was a daily thing for our Lord and it can be said that Jesus truly prayed without ceasing.

It is an absolute fact, the more we pray the closer we will get to God.

Jesus said if we pray in His name, God will answer every prayer that reaches into His throne room.

Joh 15:16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

So let’s let Jesus teach us how to pray.

*****Luk 11:1 And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.

The Lord Jesus Christ spent much time in prayer. Prayer was not unknown to these disciples.

They had witnessed prayers at the Temple and in their own synagogues.

They had heard the long winded prayers of the Scribes and the Pharisees.

They had known the prayers of John the Baptist, who had taught his own disciples how to pray.

There was something about the way that Jesus prayed that got their attention!

**Christ Jesus prayed often and He emphasized that prayer was one of the greatest needs of each believer. Jesus insisted that His prayers were the source of His strength.

**Jesus prayed as a Son to His Father in a close and very personal relationship with Him. Jesus taught that we that believe are to have the same close and personal relationship with our Father who is in Heaven.

To be saved is to be adopted into the family of God.

**John the Baptist had taught his own disciples to pray and all these that followed the Lord Jesus knew that He was the Master teacher and could teach them also, it was a reasonable request.

Even in prayer the Lord Jesus is our example!

*****Luk 11:2 And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.

The Lord Jesus Christ will teach anyone to pray, anyone who is sincere and anyone who wants to begin a successful prayer life.

**Jesus begins with “When we pray”.

We must accept that Jesus is teaching us a “model prayer” and not a prayer that should be repeated over and over again, even though nothing is wrong with praying this prayer as it is written.

As we all have different needs and are going through different trials, so then every prayer will be different.

This model prayer is also meant for use of all the children of God no matter their age group.

This prayer is a guide for all of us who need to have a personal relationship with our Creator and our God!

**Thank God for being “Our Father”

We are to have a close personal relationship with our God!

This relationship is to be a family relationship, the relationship of of a child to his parent.

This is the relationship we have after we have been “Born Again” into the family of God!

Joh 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
Joh 1:13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

We must always thank God for being our Father!

We must always thank God that we are part of His family!

This is our assurance that we will spend eternity with not only all other believers but even our own earthly family if they will also trust in the Lord Jesus.

It is this model prayer that will open our eyes to the right way of looking at things.

Remember just a few lessons back, God was teaching us to have the right attitude.

Thank God we have a Father who cares about each and everyone of us!

Once God is our Father, that can never change!

Joh 10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
Joh 10:28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
Joh 10:29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.
Joh 10:30 I and my Father are one.

**Thank God for “In Heaven”

Heaven is a real place!

Heaven is the eternal real world, while this place we live now is only a temporary place.

Heaven is incorruptible and undefiled and it will never fade away!

Heaven is where God our Father resides and we will one day be with Him there in that place called Heaven.

Jesus said:

Joh 14:1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.
Joh 14:2 In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

And God’s truth is:

1Co 2:9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.

We truly do not have a clue just how wonderful Heaven is going to be!

**We need to praise God for “His name is Hallowed”.

God’s name is to set apart from all other names.

Our God is holy, and righteous, and pure, and loving, and kind, and merciful, and gracious.

God is to be praised for who He is!

We do not hallow God, if we speak of Him in an irreverent fashion.

We do not hallow God when we take His name in vain.

In fact we do not hallow God unless we worship Him in spirit and in truth!

Joh 4:23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
Joh 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

We do not hallow God unless we honor God in our own households!

If we do not have sense of God’s majesty and God’s holiness we will never hallow God’s name!

AND, We do not hallow the Almighty God if we do not have a devout response of “faith” in Him!

Heb 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

God’s attributes are “His Name”

God has made Himself known to us by His Word but also by His Created Works!

We do not hallow the name of God if we do not trust in His power to direct and overrule all things, good and evil!

Holy is the name of God!

Isa 57:15 For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.

Only after we have praised God in our prayer are we to make request of Him!

**We need to pray for God’s Kingdom to come.

In this sense we are praying for the spreading of the “Gospel” of Jesus Christ throughout this world.

We are praying for God’s spiritual kingdom to come into all our lives and the “Gospel” has been spread throughout this world.

This is a prayer to personally receive the “Gospel”!

This is a prayer to personally promote the spread of the “Gospel”!

This is a prayer to persevere in prayer for the success of the “Gospel”!

God says to pray for Him to come but we must remember, when Christ returns to this earth, He will set upon His throne. He will rule and reign upon this earth for 1000 years.

This is the Kingdom that will ultimately be established in fulfillment of the covenant with the Jews.

Before that happens. His will needs to be done in all our lives just as it will be in Heaven.

There is the Spiritual Kingdom, which is God’s authority over all the souls of believers.

There is the Visible Kingdom, the Church, which is visible to all mankind.

There is the Heavenly Kingdom which comes after the rapture of the Church!

**Thy will be done as in Heaven

It should be very obvious to us all that God’s will is not done on earth as it is in Heaven.

We are all unworthy to receive the “Grace of God”!

God’s will for us all is faith and holiness.

We cannot please God without faith.

We are to live holy because our God is a Holy God.

The Lord’s Prayer indicates the right way of looking at things!

The Lord’s Prayer is a prayer that this world we now live in would be filled with the knowledge of God!

The Lord’s Prayer is a prayer that the “Grace” of God will rule in every heart!

The Lord’s Prayer is a prayer that God, by His Grace, will remove all spiritual blindness and cause us all to know His will for each of us!

It is God’s will that all the world be saved.

2Pe 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

*****Luk 11:3 Give us day by day our daily bread.

We are certainly to pray for the necessities of life and we are to do that on a daily basis.

This is food for within and without. We need to fed spiritually and physically.

The Lord’s Prayer is a prayer to be filled as much spiritually as physically!

We must learn that we are dependant on the Lord for both these things.

The needs of the body while on this earth are great, but the truth is, the needs of the soul are far more important!

God will supply our daily needs.

God will supply those needs that are necessary for us to spread the “Gospel”.

God may even sometime supply some our wants, but our needs will always supersede our wants.

There are some rewards for those who serve the Lord but the greater rewards are in Heaven.

*****Luk 11:4 And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.

We need to spend some time discussing the forgiveness of our sins with our Father!

Our sins are a debt that we owe!

Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Our sins are the very reason God had to send His Son to pay that great debt!

Notice we are to pray specifically for the forgiveness of our own sins.

We have a debt to God that we had no means to repay.

But we are also to pray for the forgiveness of the sins of our family, our neighbors, our community, our state, our nation, and our world!

Sin is the most serious matter and the most tragic matter to ever occur in our world!

We need to pray this daily because we are still in the flesh and without a doubt, we sin daily!

Our old sins are already under the blood and it is unnecessary to continue to ask for the forgiveness of those sins!

God does not remember those sins anymore!

Jer 31:34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

God does not want us to remember those old sins anymore!

Heb 10:17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.
Heb 10:18 Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.

Jesus said that part was finished when He was on the cross!

Until we meet Jesus, we will still come up short of His glory and Jesus is teaching us to pray for this reason!

As God has forgiven our sins then we are to be forgiving of all others.

This is a condition of our own forgiveness!

Mat 6:14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:
Mat 6:15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Eph 4:32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.

We should realize that every confession of sin is always fulfilled with a pardon!

**Lead us not into temptation.

First, God will never tempt us!

Jas 1:13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:
Jas 1:14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.

We are to have a sincere belief in the providence of God!

It is when we trust in ourselves when temptation can overcome us!

We must have the faith that God is able to deliver us from all evil.

**”Deliver us from evil”

Satan the Devil is real!

We are to avoid all occasions of evil.

We are to give no place to the devil.

We should understand that “evil” is anything and everything that goes against the Word of God!

The Devil is above all, the evil one and the great opposition to the goodness of God!

Worldly afflictions come and go and are indeed grievous so long as they last and they require our prayers.

Sin is evil in it’s nature and high treason against Heaven!

Sin will enslave us!

Sin is a painful thing. Sin is its own punishment to our bodies and sin will destroy the soul!

Sin is worse than death, though death might kill us, but it could not curse us!

The sin of God’s people are even greater than the sins of the world because we sin against the “Mercy” and the “Grace” of God that He has already shown to us!

We should pray for God’s deliverance from evil because God has more “Grace” than He does “wrath”!

Rom 5:20 Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:
Rom 5:21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.

And Jesus says we must be sincere and persistent in our prayers, we may have to make many request to fulfill the will of God.

*****Luk 11:5 And he said unto them, Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, and say unto him, Friend, lend me three loaves;
Luk 11:6 For a friend of mine in his journey is come to me, and I have nothing to set before him?
Luk 11:7 And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee.
Luk 11:8 I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth.

What the truth of our prayers?

When we get into the throne room of God through our prayer, then we must refuse to leave until we get an answer.

How is this possible?

We must be sincere in our need, fervent in our request, constant, persistent, persevering and enduring when we are in contact with our Lord!

Micky Mouse prayers will not move the hand of God!

We need to ask until we get what we need, or that God says no.

Sometimes the greatest blessing we can get is when God says no to something we think we need!

And, Sometimes we have to be somewhat like a pest to move the hand of God!

Jesus gives us the answer to our problems in prayer.

*****Luk 11:9 And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.
Luk 11:10 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

“Ask and it shall be given” We should continue to ask until we receive, but if asking is not enough, Then

“Seek, and ye shall find”, But in seeking and we do not find what we need, Then

“Knock, and it shall be open unto us”

The words “ask, seek, and knock” are verbs which means these are things we must do in a continuous action.

We are to keep on with these things until we know for sure we have God’s answer.

God must know we are sincere!

God knows: Jas 1:8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

The one thing we must consider is, “That God is always willing to give us the things that will fulfill the will and the purpose He has for us!

No matter the circumstances of our life, God will meet our needs!

No matter what we think sometimes, if our prayer can reach the throne room of God, we will get an answer even when it may be a “no” answer.

Deu 4:29 But if from thence thou shalt seek the LORD thy God, thou shalt find him, if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy soul.

**There are other reasons that God does not answer our prayer immediately.

1) Prayer teaches us to have a close personal relationship with the Lord our God!

God loves to hear from us and He may hold back to keep us talking and sharing our needs with Him.

1Co 1:9 God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

2) Prayer teaches to have patience and hope in God and His promises.

1Jn 5:14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:
1Jn 5:15 And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

3) Prayer demonstrates how deeply we trust God and how much we depend upon Him.

Joh 15:5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

4) Prayer teaches us to love God as our Father.

*****Luk 11:11 If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent?
Luk 11:12 Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?
Luk 11:13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

Prayer teaches us that God is not evil, God is like a loving Father.

Not one man upon this earth is a righteous man.

Rom 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

But most men who are also fathers will give to their children when asked.

If all men are evil and God is “Good”, it is impossible for God not to give as our Heavenly Father.

Mar 10:18 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.

The greatest gift that our Father in Heaven gives us is the “Gift” of the Holy Spirit!

We have the presence of God living within our hearts and bodies.

When God dwells within those that have called on Him for salvation, then everything that is good is assured!

God is always with us and never far away and He knows us by our fruit!

Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
Gal 5:23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
Gal 5:24 And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
Gal 5:25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

And we can be sure that God will answer our prayers!

Jer 33:2 Thus saith the LORD the maker thereof, the LORD that formed it, to establish it; the LORD is his name;
Jer 33:3 Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.

Prayer is the greatest tool in the arsenal of the Christian, yet in most cases we all lack in a proper prayer life!

The truth is our Father in Heaven is not a dead beat dad who cares very little for his children, God is a true Father who cares for His children.

1Pe 5:6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:
1Pe 5:7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

The Prayers Of God’s Servant

The Prayers Of God’s Servant

“In The Garden”

Book of Mark Chapter 14:25-46

It should be clear in all our minds, there is nothing that happened to the Lord Jesus Christ that came by accident!

Everything that happened to Christ Jesus was written down in the Old Testament many years before they actually took place.

If all these things had not happened then Christ Jesus would have been a false Savior.

Not Rome, not Israel, and not Satan, could have changed anything that happened to Our Lord!

God cannot be set aside by some rule of any government!

God cannot be set aside by the Devil!

And God cannot be set aside by mankind without consequences!

What God says in His completed Word will take place just as He has written!

After what is now called and celebrated as the Lord’s Supper and Judas has departed to complete his betrayal, Jesus moves to the “Garden of Gethsemane” where He will be captured(He was not hiding) by His enemies.

Let’s begin:

*****Mar 14:26  And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.

Christianity is not just a thing of principles! Christianity is not just following some book of rules!

But Christianity has within it praise and worship, but we must not leave out celebration of Our Lord and God!

The Psalms normally used at the Passover meal are Psalms 113-118, with Psalms 115 being the “psalm of the passion” of the Messiah.

But, I would be surprised if the Lord Jesus did not sing a song of celebration for the day He had come for had arrived!

Heb 12:2  Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; “who for the joy” that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

We may not know the actual difference between a hymn and a psalm but on this night of the Lord’s Supper, no instruments of music were available, so a hymn could be a psalm that was sung without the use of musical instruments.

The Passover had to be treated just as any Sabbath Day and Sabbath’s Day Journey from Jerusalem could take you no farther than the Mount of Olives.

And Jesus began to give His final thoughts to His disciples.

*****Mar 14:27  And Jesus saith unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered. Mar 14:28  But after that I am risen, I will go before you into Galilee.

According to the Webster dictionary to be “offended” is to be displeased or even disgusted.

According to the Strong’s Dictionary of Greek words, the Greek word “skandalizo” is used for the English word “offended” and it means to “scandalize” or “entrap” or even “to trip” and therefore be a stumbling block.

I believe Jesus was saying all these things to His disciples.

So what would actually happen?

Zec 13:7  Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the LORD of hosts: smite the shepherd, and “the sheep shall be scattered”: and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones.

Those little ones represent the believer.

Jesus said all this prophecy would be fulfilled.

Jesus was teaching these 11 remaining disciples that all prophecies and everything written about Him in the Old Testament, must be fulfilled!

Jesus was not demanding or commanding that these men abandon Him, but He was stating the fact that they would do just as the Scriptures had said they would, they would scatter.

Jesus Christ knows what is in the heart of every man!

Jesus was preparing these disciples for His departure.

“Omniscience”, is the character of God that means “He knows all things actual and possible”, whether past, present, or future!

What Jesus was saying to these disciples would be what would actually take place!

All sheep are in need of a shepherd!

It is Our Shepherd, the Lord Jesus Christ, that would be smitten!

The world would attempt to kill and murder the Lord Jesus Christ but He had come to die and would freely give His life for the sheep.

Joh 10:11  I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.

But Jesus assured these disciples that He was not about to forsake them.

Jesus would be in that grave for only 3 days and nights:

Mat 12:40  For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

But at no time would these disciples be in any great danger and Jesus promised to meet them in Galilee because He already knew where they would be!

Jesus already knew His disciples would have a desire to quit on Him, though they all denied this.

Joh 21:3  Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing. Joh 21:4  But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus. Joh 21:5  Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered him, No.

The Lord was there to meet His disciples in Galilee.

But Peter just could not accept the Word of God as it was written:

*****Mar 14:29  But Peter said unto him, Although all shall be offended, yet will not I.

We should never ignore the Word of God!

“God says what He means and God also means what He says”!

The Bible still says that none of the scriptures can be broken!

Joh 10:35  If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and “the scripture cannot be broken”;

I wish our government would pay attention to this fact.

The Apostle John clearly got this right when he wrote this passage:

Joh 1:1  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Jesus Christ is the eternal revealer of the One True God!

John did not write that Jesus is “a word” but that He is “The Word”.

God had already said this and these Jews sang these words in a Psalm on the Sabbath Day.

Psa 40:7  Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book “it is written of me”,

If the Lord Jesus said something was going to happen, then it will definitely happen!

As sinners none of us liked the truth of the Bible and this lost world still does not like what God says.

Isa 64:6  But “we are all as an unclean thing”, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

Even as Christians we may still not like everything the Bible says.

Rom 7:18  For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. Rom 7:19  For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.

But God has only one command about His Word.

Jas 1:23  For if any be a hearer of the word, and “not a doer”, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: Jas 1:24  For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. Jas 1:25  But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

We must be doers of the Word of God to be called “obedient”!

To be “obedient” is to be “Christian”, be like Jesus Christ!

We will see that Peter did not like the Word of the Lord. Peter did not like what he heard from the Old Testament!

We think we want to know what will happen in our lives before we die, BUT it is probably just better to prepare ourselves for this evil world, and we can only do that by “true faith” in the Word of God and what it says.

Jesus told Peter exactly what things would happen this same day.

*****Mar 14:30  And Jesus saith unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this day, even in this night, before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice.

Jesus said, (my words) “Peter as confident as you are right now, you will fail me today”.

You see we are always wrong to try to trust in our own strength!

The simple fact is, we all need Jesus Christ to have any strength in this world!

Php 4:13  I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

In other words there is not many things we can do without Jesus Christ.

I cannot speak for the women but we men know that “pride” gets in our way and becomes our own stumbling block just as it did with Peter.

The pure fact is that, if we do not allow the Word of God “to remove this pride” and “humble us”, we will never be of much use to the Lord Jesus.

Humility must be the first lesson we learn in becoming a Christian!

Humility is not weakness!

Humility is “strength” under control!

Our first test in humility comes when we have to admit we are sinners, because we have to admit that the Lord is right and we are wrong!

Peter was still struggling with this as we all sometimes do!

Most men can relate to Peter.

*****Mar 14:31  But he spake the more vehemently, If I should die with thee, I will not deny thee in any wise. Likewise also said they all.

Peter had to much confidence in His own strength!

The Apostle was truly the strength of these 11 men. His influence was powerful. Peter was a true man!

These qualities were necessary if the New Testament Church was to take hold but Peter still lacked in humbleness and obedience.

Peter’s birth name was Simon Bar-Jonah or Simon, son of Jonah.

But the Lord had given Simon this “nickname” of Peter.

Luk 6:13  And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples: and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles; Luk 6:14  Simon, (whom he also named Peter,) and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew,

Jesus did not just give him a new name to replace the old name but this nickname was more his true description. Peter means “rock”.

Petros is the Greek word for “piece of rock”.

And Jesus had also used the name Cephas at times.

Joh 1:42  And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.

Cephas means a piece of stone.

Peter was truly a piece of raw material that could be formed into a true leader but he was a stone and it takes patience from the Lord to remove the stones from the clay!

Isa 64:8  But now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand.

We should be very thankful that the Lord does not throw that stony clay away for I myself fit into many of Peter’s faults.

Php 1:6  Being confident of this very thing, “that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ”:

What Peter was saying, now all the disciples were in agreement with. They all agreed that none would deny the Lord Jesus Christ.

But they were all wrong!

*****Mar 14:32  And they came to a place which was named Gethsemane: and he saith to his disciples, Sit ye here, while I shall pray.

Gethsemane means “oil-press” or “olive press”.

The Garden of Gethsemane is just across the Kidron Valley and at the base of the Mount of Olives.

The Book of Hebrews describes this night for us:

Heb 5:7  Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared; Heb 5:8  Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; Heb 5:9  And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him; Heb 5:10  Called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec.

Remember Melchisedec was the King-Priest of Salem. Melchisedec means “my king is righteousness”. There was no record of his ancestry, and no record of his birth nor of his death.

This prophecy would also be to be fulfilled by Our Lord and also another song that was sung in the Temple on the Sabbath Day:

Psa 110:1  The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool. Psa 110:2  The LORD shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion: rule thou in the midst of thine enemies. Psa 110:3  Thy people shall be willing in the day of thy power, in the beauties of holiness from the womb of the morning: thou hast the dew of thy youth. Psa 110:4  The LORD hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.

Only Jesus Christ, whose life can never be destroyed, could ever fit this description of Melchisedec.

Jesus came to Gethsemane to pray!

The Lord walked with Adam in the Garden of Eden.

The Lord walked and prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane.

The Lord would soon be buried in a Garden Tomb.

*****Mar 14:33  And he taketh with him Peter and James and John, and began to be sore amazed, and to be very heavy; Mar 14:34  And saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death: tarry ye here, and watch.

All the disciples but Judas Iscariot were in the Garden, but as Jesus went deeper into the Garden and took with Him, Peter, James and John.

As these men had witnessed the transfiguration of the Lord Jesus, they were brought to also be witnesses of His sorrows.

Jesus began to be sore amazed:

As Jesus was about to die for the sin of the world, “within His flesh”, Jesus was “amazed” at the enormous amount of and the filthiness of all that sin He was about to take upon Himself.

Remember even in His flesh, The Lord had never sinned!

Jesus could sense the wrath of God, within His flesh for that sin.

The darkness of this world was gathering thick over the only light that has ever existed for the freedom of God’s people!

It can be said that Satan was making an attempt to kill the Lord Jesus before He had an opportunity to get to the Cross!

Remember what the Bible says:

Joh 3:14  And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:

But, God’s “sword of justice” was also being unsheathed.

It was in His flesh that Jesus realized these things and much more.

BUT, the Spirit of Jesus knew all these things and had joy!

This “amazement” at the amount of sin that was to be carried to the cross would soon change to “sorrow”!

Jesus began to be very heavy:

“Heavy” in this sense means sad, dejected, and depressed. This are things that the flesh of man can realize.

That burden of sin was tremendous!

Remember Jesus was to carry with Him not only the sin of His day, but the sin from the days of Adam, where the disobedience of eating that fruit would be paid, but also all the sin through the day we live in now and all future sin from this day forward until the New Heaven and the New Earth.

Sin is “ungodliness”.

“Ungodliness” is man’s failure to obey God and keep the commandments related to Him and brings with it unrighteousness.

“Unrighteousness” is man’s failure to to live righteously toward his fellow man and God.

Sin is the sinful state and the conditions in which mankind is born!

Sin is the corruption of our nature!

The corruption of sin extends to all mankind and to all parts of each man!

There is nothing within mankind that can gain merit in the eyes of God!

Rom 3:23  For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

AND, there is only one payment for our sin!

Rom 6:23  For the wages of sin is “death”; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

That gift of God, Christ Jesus in the flesh, was feeling the burden of this sin this night in the Garden of Gethsemane.

Php 2:8  And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

It was God Himself, who became humble, “the strength of God under control”!

Jesus Christ was obedient to Our Father in Heaven, from the cradle to the cross!

Christ Jesus, not only obeyed God the Father, but He had obeyed His parents.
He had obeyed all the man-made laws that did not conflict with the Word of God. He had also obey every law He, Himself, had given to Moses!

So, Jesus, in His flesh did not want to be alone this night!

Peter, James and John may not have realized these things but Our Father in Heaven did!

Luk 22:43  And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.

Jesus went on a bit further alone to pray.

*****Mar 14:35  And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.

Here we see the agony of a totally innocent man, who had to be considered guilty, in the eyes of Our Father in Heaven, “to pay the debt of all those who are truly guilty!

Jesus Christ paid the debt we owed. Jesus, in His flesh, was death for us!

This too is our example:

1Pe 3:17  For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing. 1Pe 3:18  For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death “in the flesh”, but quickened by the Spirit:

Did Jesus pray for a way out of that death?

Joh 12:27  Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: “but for this cause came I unto this hour”.

No, God forbid, this is why the Lord had come to this Earth!

Did Jesus pray that He could not obey this one time?

Psa 40:7  Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me, Psa 40:8  I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.

No, God forbid, Jesus was delighted to obey His Father!

Jesus always prayed for each one of us for our salvation!

Joh 17:9  I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.

Joh 17:15  I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.

Joh 17:19  And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth. Joh 17:20  Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;

Jesus was in agony because for a very brief moment He would have to feel the wrath of God for all our sakes!

Eph 2:16  And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby: Eph 2:17  And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh. Eph 2:18  For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.

It took a “Piece of God” for us all to have “Piece with God”!

Heb 13:20  Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, Heb 13:21  Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Rom 5:1  Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

All these things were accomplished on that cross.

*****Mar 14:36  And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.

The Lord Jesus cried out to His Father in Heaven, as any true son would call out to his own father!

The title “Abba” shows us the personal relationship that Jesus in the flesh had with His Father in Heaven.

AND, God will relate to each and every believer as a father should relate to his own child!

Some would say that “Abba” then means “Daddy”!

Only Christianity teaches this relationship to the Almighty God and this is the relationship that God wants from each of us!

In fact if we do not have this type of relationship with Our Lord then we must not stop until we do!

Most all prayer must be seen as child in conversation with their daddy!

This is not showing disrespect, IN FACT, it is disrespectful not to have this personal relationship with Our Father who is in Heaven!

Gal 4:6  And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Gal 4:7  Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

And immediately following Jesus said, 0 “Daddy, I know that there is nothing that you cannot do”.

There is no need to pray, unless we pray “realizing” that Our Father in Heaven can do all things!

There is nothing to hard for God!

God had already asked the Prophet Jeremiah this same question:

Jer 32:27  Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me?

And The Lord confirmed this:

Mat 19:26  But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.

One thing that God cannot do is lie:

Tit 1:2  In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;

One other thing that God cannot do is be tempted to sin:

Jas 1:13  Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: Jas 1:14  But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.

But God knows what it feels like to feel all these things.

Heb 4:15  For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Heb 4:16  Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

It is all these things that allow for answered prayer.

Jesus could have prayed for these things to end without His death but He did not!

Mat 26:53  Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels? Mat 26:54  “But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled”, that thus it must be?

The Word of God must be fulfilled just as it is written or we could not trust it’s truths and no one would be saved.

This is why we cannot allow man to change what God has said!

We must use a literal translation of the Hebrew and Greek scriptures or God’s great truths will be lost!

And Jesus went back to check upon those that were supposed to be watching out for Him:

*****Mar 14:37  And he cometh, and findeth them sleeping, and saith unto Peter, Simon, sleepest thou? couldest not thou watch one hour?

Jesus took a moment from His prayer and walked to Peter, James and John who were only a stone’s throw away from Him.

Luk 22:41  And he was withdrawn from them about a stone’s cast, and kneeled down, and prayed,

Jesus then said these words to Peter, but notice, Jesus did not call Peter by his nickname but by his true name Simon.

Peter, the rock, had already said to the Lord, that he would be with Jesus every step of the way.

Peter, the rock, had said that “though all be offended, he would never be offended about anything about Christ Jesus.

Cephas or Peter meant “stone” or “rock” but this night Peter was just being Simon, his regular old self.

Peter was just not sincere enough in the things he said, to even watch over the Lord in His hour of “passion”, for one hour, and none of these had done any better.

Jesus was saying,(my words) “how can you stand with Me all this night if you cannot stay awake even for 1 hour”?

We can surely disappoint the Lord with some of the things we say and then not do!

We seem to forget sometimes when we say things to the Lord, He already knows the outcome of those things!

*****Mar 14:38  Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak. Mar 14:39  And again he went away, and prayed, and spake the same words.

These disciples were about to go through many trials and tribulations of their own and they did not realize it.

It is not always easy to live as Christian!

We must all prepare ourselves for this evil world and our greatest armament as we see the things going on in this world we live in, is “prayer”. There is still danger on all sides! Those dangers will remain until we get home!

Eph 6:12  For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

The spiritual war these, soon to be called, Apostles would face was real and was certain!

Every soldier in the army of God must keep his weapons and his defence ready at all times!

Eph 6:13  Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Eph 6:14  Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; Eph 6:15  And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Eph 6:16  Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. Eph 6:17  And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

And we simply must maintain a sincere prayer life:

Eph 6:18  Praying “always” with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

And we must watch out for each and every other brother and sister in Christ!

Jesus went back to His own prayer.

*****Mar 14:40  And when he returned, he found them asleep again, (for their eyes were heavy,) neither wist they what to answer him. Mar 14:41  And he cometh the third time, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: it is enough, the hour is come; behold, the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

It is a shame when we allow, our lack of control of our own flesh, to interfere with some very personal time with the Lord!

This is what the act of fasting is all about, having that truly personal time!

We miss out on a lot of personal time with the Lord when we cannot control our own flesh!

We must also never forget, that the enemies of Jesus Christ, are also the enemies of the Church.

But a church is not a Church unless it is founded on the foundation of Jesus Christ!

We see in so-called churches everyday, where The Lord Jesus Christ is still being betrayed!

Every time the Word of God is perverted by those who rewrite the scriptures, the Lord Jesus Christ is still being betrayed!

The atonement, the cross, the blood, and the gospel no longer have real meaning to the world we live in!

In our upside down world it is becoming a sin just to say you know the Lord Jesus Christ!

In our upside down world it is becoming sin just to say you believe the Word of God!

BUT, for the church our greatest sin is being inconsistent in our Love for Our Lord!

These 3 disciples had missed a great opportunity to witness the God-Man in His passion.

But now at this time, even these men needed to be awake and alert.

*****Mar 14:42  Rise up, let us go; lo, he that betrayeth me is at hand.
Mar 14:43  And immediately, while he yet spake, cometh Judas, one of the twelve, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.

Judas may not have known where Jesus and the disciples would eat the Passover meal but he certainly knew where Jesus would go after that meal.

Joh 18:1  When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples. Joh 18:2  And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples.

Judas had brought a great multitude so that there would be no possibility of Jesus’s escape.

But Jesus had no intention of escaping and said:

Joh 18:4  Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?

Things were going to happen just as the prophets had written!

Luke said Jesus added these words:

Luk 22:48  But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?

As the Psalmist had written:

Psa 41:9  Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.

Judas had taken of the Lord’s Supper in deception. Judas Iscariot was a hypocrite!

And there will be no hypocrites in Heaven!

*****Mar 14:44  And he that betrayed him had given them a token, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he; take him, and lead him away safely.

In the East, the kiss was a mark of respect and/or affection.

The kiss was also a symbol of brotherly love!

The kiss was therefore easy for the “hypocrite” to pretend to love.

When we pretend, our actions will soon find us out!

*****Mar 14:45  And as soon as he was come, he goeth straightway to him, and saith, Master, master; and kissed him.

We know that the prayer of Jesus was answered:

Heb 5:7  Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared;

The proof that  the prayer of Jesus was answered is also proof that He did not pray for God to find another way beside His death!

The days of God in the flesh, Emmanuel, had began at Bethlehem and would end at His resurrection.

But God never for one moment lost His godly nature!

Some of those that have gone on before us say that there will be many, as much as 80 %, that will slide off the pew straight into Hell.

Judas is proof of this!

Judas had spent more than 3 years with the only way to get to Heaven, but he had never found that true faith.

BUT, when the hour of the cross came, Our Lord did not want anything or anyone trying to defeat God’s plan!

Jesus then said these words:

Luk 22:52  Then Jesus said unto the chief priests, and captains of the temple, and the elders, which were come to him, Be ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and staves? Luk 22:53  When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness.

The power of darkness includes all powers that are hostile to God!

But we should also remember that darkness also symbolizes ignorance, especially of God’s Word and God’s ways:

Joh 12:44  Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me. Joh 12:45  And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me. Joh 12:46  I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me “should not abide in darkness”.

We all have to make our own decision!

Whether we are going to go through life “pretending” like Judas, or “fighting” against our flesh like Peter or “yielding” to God’s plan and finding God’s perfect will for our own lives!

Questions?

Let’s Pray!
